Mary Ella Muse Hammond, 92, formerly of Winfield Drive, Spartanburg, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at Cooper Hall Assisted Living, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Born April 17, 1920, in Greensboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Donald Haywood and Lucile Margaret Bennett Muse. Mary Ella was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend. She loved playing games with her family and friends, consistently winning most games, especially Scrabble. She was a proficient painter and her paintings will be treasured by her family for years to come. She made each holiday with her family a special and memorable occasion. She and her husband loved to travel, having visited all 50 states and approximately 30 countries. Above all she was a dedicated Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. She was first chairwoman of Ladies First Thursday Ministry, served for numerous years as a Sunday School teacher and was an active member of Christian Women's Club, Young at Heart, and Total Ministries. Surviving are her husband, of 72 years, H. P. Hammond of Spartanburg, SC; daughter, Mary Lynn Hammond Nettles of Charleston, SC; son, H. P. "Buddy" Hammond, Jr. (Kay) of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Kristin Hammond Rogers (Chris) of Greenville, SC, Brantlee Bennett Nettles of Raleigh, NC, John E. Nettles, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, and Mark H. Nettles (Shanen) of McClellanville, SC; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, William Irvin Muse of Greensboro, NC; and sister, Betty Jean Muse Jackson of Wilmington, NC. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald H. Muse, Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy M. Muse. Visitation will be 2:00-3:45 PM Friday, July 27, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial will be private.
