Mary Elizabeth Carver, known fondly as Betty to her loved ones, passed away after battling a brief illness on Tuesday, June 11,2024. Betty was born on July 14,1945 to the late Mr. Daniel and Ola Carver in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Betty’s career in education was remarkable. She spent 30 years teaching French at Spartanburg High School and then continued to share her passion for the language at Spartanburg Community College for another 15 years after retiring. Her dedication to teaching extended beyond regular classrooms as she volunteered at the College for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Asheville, NC, and The Shepherd's Center in Spartanburg, SC. Betty’s fluency in French was one of her proudest accomplishments. She thoroughly enjoyed imparting her knowledge to others. Outside of work, Betty found joy in reading and traveling. A true Francophile, she visited France multiple times, acting as a knowledgeable guide and interpreter for those visiting from the United States exploring the country.
Betty is survived by a brother; Fred Carver (Betty), fifteen nieces and nephews and numerous family friends. Betty was predeceased by her father; Daniel Carver, mother; Ola Bell Cogdill Carver, brothers; James Carver, David Carver and Joseph Carver, and a sister; Bernice Lawter.
Services to honor Betty's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024. A visitation will take place from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM at The JF Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street Spartanburg, SC 29307. Following the service, the burial will take place at 2:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Park,1955 Cannons Campground Road Spartanburg, SC 29307.
