Mary Carter

Mary Wheeler Carter, 96, of Startex, SC, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at The Cottages of Brushy Creek. Born June 2, 1919, in Warren County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Rogers Sidney Wheeler and Mattie Wright Wheeler and widow of Joseph Preston Carter Jr. A loving mother, Mrs. Carter participated in book clubs and garden clubs and was active in the PTA. She was a graduate of Georgia Women's College and a member of Startex United Methodist Church. She taught 4th grade at Spartanburg District 5 for 8 years and retired from the Spartanburg County Department of Social Services after 18 years of service. Survivors include her children, Joseph P. "Buddy" Carter III (Jenny) of Greer, SC, Mary Jo Miller (Virgil) of Costa Rica, and Carol Danielson (Bob) of Prosper, TX; grandchildren, Cindy Carter, Matt Carter (Bridget), Emmy Carter, and Meri Linscomb (Adam); great-grandchildren, Georgia Carter, Jackson and Jordan Linscomb. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 100 School St., Greer, SC 29651, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Brandi Casto-Waters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at their respective homes.
