Mary Burwell

Mary Ruth Moore Burwell, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, February 20, 2017, at RoseCrest-Inman. Born November 8, 1924, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Boyce Simeon and Clara Dillard Moore and widow of James Wilson Burwell. Mrs. Burwell received her Bachelor's Degree from Winthrop College and Master's Degree from Converse College. She retired from District 7 after 37 years in education. She was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church where she was a choir member. She also studied at Juilliard School in New York, was a member of the Spartanburg Philharmonic, and served as choir director at Fernwood Baptist and Westminster Presbyterian Churches. Survivors include her son, Larry Burwell of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Wilson Burwell (Amber) of Goodyear, AZ and Krista Lansdell (Len) of Chesnee, SC; and great-grandchildren, Gaines and Addison Burwell. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by brothers, Col. Robert S. Moore and Col. James H. Moore. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2017, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Norrell.
