Mary Boone

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Hobby Boone, 88, died Monday, March 6, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House after a long illness. She was born in Concord, NC and was a resident of Spartanburg for 51 years. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles Chaffin Boone; her daughter, Mary Boone Pinkowish; her sons-in-law, Thomas John Pinkowish and Paul Elwin Rollins, Jr.; and her grandsons, Alexander Boone Pinkowish and Charles Elwin Rollins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Wende Boone Rollins; and her granddaughter, Rachel Marie Evans. Her parents were James Hilary Hobby and Mae Mast Hobby. Betty graduated from Concord High School and attended St. Mary's and Appalachian State University. She loved art and taught it for many years at Twaddell School in Durham, NC. She was a dedicated wife and mother and will be remembered by many people for her kindness, her grace, her humor and her ability to immediately connect with people of all ages from all walks of life. Betty was active for many years in the community in book clubs, the garden club, the Magnolia Debutantes, Central United Methodist Church and many other groups. She loved music, traveling and won awards for her floral arrangements. She was very proud of her heritage as a member of the Mast family. As a young girl, she spent every summer at her "Aunt Josie's" which is now the Mast Farm Inn in Valle Crucis, NC. A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, March 10, 2017, at Central United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Tom Norrell, the Rev. Luther Rickenbaker, and the Rev. Todd Walker. Visitation will be held in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
