Marvin Newman

Marvin Lee Newman, 89, of Spartanburg, died Friday, November 8, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born January 29, 1924, in Hendersonville, NC, he was the son of the late John B. and Virgie Lee Pye Newman. Mr. Newman was the owner of Newman's TV Repair for 50 years, worked at Beaumont Mills for 10 years, attended Beaumont Baptist Church, and later attended First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, played steel guitar, and Dobro. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. In April of 1944, Marvin landed in Scotland and from there he went to England, Wales, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Luxembourg. He fought with the First, Third and Ninth armies, and was in five campaigns: Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and landed at Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign medal, E.T.O. ribbon with five bronze stars, Good Conduct medal and the Victory medal. Surviving is wife, Ina; daughters, Lajuan Newman Floyd of Spartanburg and Patsy Knighton of Woodruff; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Melvin Ray Newman. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306 by the Rev. Sal Barone and the Rev. Bob Neely. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, 1955 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Visitation will at the graveside following the service.
