Martha Marieta “Rita” McCarley Weaver, a devoted Christian and faithful servant of our Lord, Jesus Christ, died peacefully, at the age of 93, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. At the time of her death, she was residing with her family in Newport, NC.
Rita was born in Spartanburg, SC on May 5, 1931, to the late Edwin Law McCarley and Myrtle Nance McCarley. In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Rev Jack Douglas Weaver; son, Kris Randall Weaver; sisters, Elizabeth (Stephens), Nancy (Gowan), Peggy Jean, and Patricia (Kennedy); brothers, Robert Edwin, and William Sydney.
She graduated from Spartanburg High School at age 17. She married Jack on June 30, 1950. As a pastor’s wife for more than 70 years, Rita served with Jack in several area churches, singing solos, directing choirs, teaching all levels of Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes, participating in the Woman’s Missionary Union, preparing meals for others, helping those who were sick or in need, always giving of her time and talents. Jack and Rita’s final church to serve was United Baptist Church in Spartanburg, where Rita maintained her faithful membership since 2006.
Rita, with Jack and their young children loved vacation trips to Myrtle Beach, SC. They enjoyed tent camping, cooking over a fire pit or a Coleman stove, playing in the sand, and soaking in the ocean. Later in life, they bought a 5th wheel trailer and camped in the mountains with a wonderful circle of church friends. Rita also found joy in playing her piano, singing, sewing, growing, and arranging flowers, charcoal drawing, watercolor painting, basket making and ceramics.
