Martha Stocks

Martha Butner Stocks, 97, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born December 6, 1918, in Bethania, NC, she was the daughter of the late Leon Thaddeus and Bertha Fitzgerald Butner. She was married for 58 years to the late Tommy J. Stocks, Jr. Martha was a graduate of Old Town High School in Winston-Salem, NC. With beach sand in her shoes, she spent summers at Carolina Beach, NC. Mrs. Stocks loved her Lord, her church, the Moravian Fellowship, and her friends. She was an avid reader, was very creative, and loved crafting items such as handmade crochet lace, baskets, and Christmas ornaments. She was a lifelong member of the Bethania Moravian Church in Bethania, NC and founding member of the Palmetto Moravian Fellowship in Spartanburg, SC where she served as coordinator and a Diener. Martha was an active member of the Junior Welfare Club in Hendersonville, NC and for three summers she served as the properties mistress for Lake Summit Playhouse and later for the Flat Rock Playhouse. After moving to Spartanburg, she volunteered in the community and was a member of the Book Reporters Book Club. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Stocks High (Roy E.) of Greenville, SC; grandsons, Thomas E. High (Diane) of Port Orange, FL and William D. High (Linda) of Charlotte, NC; and great-granddaughters, Kathryn Chatham High and Elizabeth Stocks High, both of Charlotte, NC; and special niece and her family, Sara Hoover Hamm (Stanley) of Wilmington, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Butner Hoover and Ruth Butner Mock. Visitation will be 9:00-9:45 AM Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 AM, at the Chapel, conducted by The Reverend Dr. C. Daniel Crews. Burial will be in God's Acre at the Bethania Moravian Church in Bethania, NC.
