Martha Jane Hughston, 89, widower of Thomas Newton Hughston, passed away peacefully Friday, March 4, 2022 at her home. Born October 4, 1932 in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Charles Paul Capell and Nannie Mae Batson Capell.
Jane attended Winthrop College and Furman University. She was a legal administrative assistant, owner of Noah’s Ark Kennel, and taught German at Spartanburg Community College.
She was an avid gardener, hunter, wildlife advocate and educator. Jane taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of American Business Women’s Association, lifelong member of the NRA, and life-member of Wildlife Action, Inc.
Jane was an active member of Covenant Baptist Church, and a previous member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Hughston (Charles Finkelstein) and Janie Hughston, all of Fairforest, SC; her grandchildren, Jessica Wright (Jake), Samantha Hughston-Varnum and Grant Varnum; and great grandchildren, Hughston Wright and Henry Wright, and her fur-baby, Dixie. She was predeceased by her sister, Ann Capell Compton.
Visitation will be 10:00 – 10:45 AM Friday, March 11, 2022, at Covenant Baptist Church, 200 Evangel Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301. A Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM at the church, conducted by The Rev. Gary Hensley. Burial will follow in Fort Prince Memorial Gardens, 125 Fort Prince Road, Wellford, SC 29385.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wildlife Action Upstate Chapter, P.O. Box 2394, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or to Covenant Baptist Church, 200 Evangel Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
