Martha Coble

Martha Peterson Coble, 79, of Chesnee, died Monday, December 16. Mrs. Coble was born August 12, 1934 in Florence, SC. She was the daughter of Robert P. and Gertrude Smith Peterson. She attended public schools in Florence where she graduated from McClenaghan High School. She earned a B.A. degree in 1956 from Columbia College and a M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina - Upstate. As a United Methodist minister's wife, Mrs. Coble served in many capacities in local churches. She loved to sing and was a member in local church choirs. She served as a Sunday School teacher, children's choir director and held various offices in the United Methodist Women. She taught school in DeKalb County, Georgia and in schools throughout SC including: Columbia, Turbeville, Sumter, Greenwood, Pickens, Union and Spartanburg. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, the Reverend William K. Coble; daughters, Cathy Heape (Francis) and Miriam Bunch; granddaughters, Meredith Bunch and Catherine Heape; and sister, Barbara Dawkins (Earl). She was predeceased by a daughter, Marie Amanda Coble. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Friday, December 20, 2013 in Poston Hall at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the church, with the Reverend Frank Lybrand and the Reverend Dr. Ted Walter officiating. Memorials may be made to a church of one's choice; or to the Alzheimer's Research and Clinical Programs, MUSC, 5900 Core Road, Suite 203, Charleston, SC 29406. Appreciation is extended to the staff and employees of Woodruff Manor for their affectionate care of Mrs. Coble for the past three years.
