Marshall Stone, Jr.

Marshall Christman Stone, Jr., 94, of Hilton Head Island, SC, died Thursday, November 25, 2021. Born April 25,1927, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Marshall Christman and Bennie Maxwell Brown Stone.

He graduated from Sewanee Military Academy. Marshall served in the United States Navy during World War II before graduating from Georgia Tech, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering in 1951. He enjoyed a successful career in the textile industry with Milliken and Company for four decades.

Marshall was an avid Georgia Tech athletics fan and played golf the first half of his life and tennis the second half. He fought for environmental issues.

Marshall was a Founder of the First Citizens Bank of Spartanburg and served for many years on the Board of the SC Kidney Foundation.

In addition to his wife of 37 years, Amanda Marie Hayes Stone, Marshall is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Stone Richardson (Ricky) and his son, Marshall Christman Stone, III (Krista) of Spartanburg, SC, and his grandchildren, Robert Payne Richardson (Nida) of Washington, DC and Caroline Christman Stone of Brevard, NC, Georgia Christman Stone of Los Angeles, CA, Anna Hemeter Stone of Spartanburg, SC, and two great grandchildren Liza Richardson and Charlie Richardson. Marshall was predeceased by a son, Ben Maxwell Stone and his sister, Bennie Stone Larj. Marshall extended his family with his wife’s son, Jeffery E. Landford (Robin) and their children, Hayes Christopher Lanford of Greenville, SC and Savannah Jane Lanford of Atlanta, GA.

A Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, December 27, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
