Marion Griffin

September 9, 1926 — July 7, 2010

Marion R. Griffin, 83, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Summit Hills. A native of Anderson, SC and resident of Spartanburg for over 60 years, he was born September 9, 1926 to the late Blair and Lillie Mae Banks Griffin and was the husband of the late Jeannette McKay Griffin. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he was founder and former president of Marion R. Griffin & Company, Inc. He was a member of the Spartanburg Board of Realtors for over 57 years having served as past president as well as many other offices. He was chosen Realtor of the Year in 1961 by the Spartanburg Board of Realtors and served as chairman of the Spartanburg County Board of Assessment Appeals for 28 years. He was awarded the designation of MAI by the Appraisal Institute having served as South Carolina Chapter President and was also designated by the National Association of Realtors as Realtor Emeritus. Mr. Griffin was a former member of the advisory board of Spartanburg Commission for Higher Education, a member of the Spartanburg Advisory Board of Palmetto Bank, a member of the Spartanburg Lions Club for 59 years, and a member of Spartan Masonic Lodge # 70 for 55 years. A member of Bethel United Methodist Church for over 60 years, he served as past chairman of the Finance Committee, past chairman of the Administrative Board, past chairman of the Child Development Committee, served on two building committees, as well as numerous other offices of the Church. Survivors include two sons, M. Ralph Griffin, Jr. and wife Robin and Stephen R. Griffin and wife Dana, all of Spartanburg; two daughters, Dr. Suzanne Griffin of Washington, D.C. and Dr. Patricia Griffin of Spartanburg; and six grandchildren, Noel Bartlow, Nathaniel Berman, Myles Griffin, Cameron Griffin, Alexander Griffin and Benjamin Womick. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. Dr. Charles A. Graves. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens and visitation will follow the committal service In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or to Mobile Meals Service, P.
