Marina Bitzas

September 14, 1913 — February 24, 2012

Marina "Presbytera" Stolakis Bitzas, 98, died Friday, February 24, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born September 14, 1913, in Tsamanta, Greece, she was a daughter of the late Stavros and Eleny Kirky Stolakis and widow of the Rev. Constantine John Bitzas. She was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, the Philoptochos Society and a recipient of the Archangel Michael Honors from the Metropolis of Atlanta. Survivors include two sons, George C. Bitzas and wife Lisa of Knoxville, TN and Steve J. Bitzas and wife Genie of Columbia, SC; a daughter, Helen and husband Ronald S. Dill of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Dean Bitzas, Van Bitzas, Marc Dill, and Marina S. Kourtis; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters and one brother in Greece. Mrs. Bitzas was predeceased by a daughter, Voula Bitzas Samaltanos; a grandson, Tino Bitzas; and two brothers. Visitation will be 6:00-7:30 PM Sunday February 26, 2012, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with the Trisagion Prayer Services at 7:15 PM. Funeral services will be 12 noon, Monday, February 27, 2012, at the church, conducted by the Rev. George F. Nayfa, the Rev. Tom Pistolis, and the Rev. Michael A. Platanis. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Building Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1107, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
