Marguerite Smith Compton, 96, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Upstate Community Hospice House. Born October 19, 1924, in Ware Shoals, SC, she was the daughter of the late Reynolds and Jeanne Cheyron Smith and wife of the late Billy Frank Compton.
Mrs. Compton was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Spartanburg and was a member of Church Women United. Mrs. Compton was a 1944 graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College and a 1946 graduate of Converse University. She was the Display Director at The Aug. W. Smith Co. for ten years. She assisted James “Buck” Buchanan in the creation of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” dioramas that captured window shoppers for decades. She was also an Assistant Society Editor for the Herald-Journal newspaper and the Assistant Registrar at Wofford College. She enjoyed gardening and deeply loved her family. Family genealogy was her passion, both researching and sharing her extensive knowledge.
Survivors include her daughter, Emily Compton; her sister, Amaryllis (Amy) Smith Almond; her grandson, Seth Compton; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Compton, all of Spartanburg; her niece, Belinda Smith Wyatt of Boiling Springs: and her nephews, David Lanier Smith of Lebanon, TN, Thomas Sidney Compton (Leigh) and Jeffery Scott Compton, both of Boiling Springs, SC, along with many great and great grand nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Philip Compton; and siblings, Jacqueline Smith Holland, Jacques Smith and Jeannette Smith Kirkley, and brother-in-laws, Thomas Milton Compton and Oscar Compton.
Visitation will be held 2-2:45 pm Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307, with funeral services following at 3:00 pm, conducted by The Rev. Sal Barone. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
