Margaret Read "Nana" West, 90, a lifelong resident of Spartanburg, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at White Oak Manor. Born November 3, 1918, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Read, Sr. and Bretta Worley Read and the wife of the late Horace Palmer West who died November 17, 1981. After retirement from Smith's Economy Drugstore in the Schuyler Building, Mrs. West was an RSVP volunteer at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in the Corner 101 Gift Shop for 18 years. She was the first volunteer to be awarded a 10,000 hours service pin. She loved to cook for her family and was known for her "Nana" bread and poundcakes. Survivors include two daughters, Judy West Carter and husband Ken of Boiling Springs, and Joyce West Veytia and husband Ralph of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Margaret Shelley Carter and David Jeffrey Carter of Boiling Springs, Cameron Grant "Bozzie" Boggs and wife Tiffany of Greenville, and Peyton Brantley Palmer Veytia of Spartanburg; two great-grandchildren, Martha-Glen Read Boggs and Cameron Grant Boggs, Jr.; a sister, Nettie Lou Read; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Otto Read, Aaron C. Read, T. W. Read, Marshall F. "Billy" Read, and Wilbur Read. Visitation will be 2:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev.
