Margaret Thomas Thompson, 65, died on Friday morning, June 19, 2015, at her home. Born October 29, 1949, in Charlotte, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Benfield and Roselyn Bundy Thomas. As a Converse College Alumnae with a Masters of Arts in Education, she was a beloved educator of generations of students at Chapman Elementary, the District 7 Odyssey Program, and was retired from Pine Street Elementary (known then as "Ms. Tillotson"). Margaret loved her vocation as much as she loved her students and had the exceptional ability to recognize every child's unique talents, and inspire them to achieve excellence. Margaret was a lover of all the arts, a rescuer of countless cats, a voracious reader, a movie buff, and an obsessive SAT practice test taker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Exceptionally proud of her two remarkable children, who adored her, she was a devoted caregiver to her dear mother, and was a loving encourager for her husband. She was truly a lovely lady, who would bring out the very best in anyone who knew her. Survivors include her husband, Tony P. Thompson; daughter, Alice Tillotson Ratterree (Charles) of Greenville, SC; son, Andy Tillotson (Elisabeth Anderson) of Chicago, IL; beloved grandchildren, Charles Wilson Ratterree, Helen Honour Ratterree, both of Greenville, SC, and Eleanore Charlotte Tillotson, of Chicago, IL; sister, Mary Thomas Bernitt (David) of Roanoke, VA; niece, Melissa Bernitt and nephew, Christopher Bernitt, both of Arlington, VA. She is also survived by her first spouse, Herman Wilson Tillotson, Jr. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, June 22, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by the Rev. Joanne R. Hull. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
