Margaret Reeves

Margaret Elizabeth Clayton Reeves, 85, of 112 Courier Place, Spartanburg, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at her home. A native of Spartanburg County, she was born on August 16, 1926, to the late William Clay Clayton and Iris Clara Crow. She attended Spartanburg City Schools, Furman University, and Cecil's Business College. Her first employment was with the Commercial National Bank when it was located in the Andrews Building on Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg. She was also with the Spartanburg County School system for a number of years as assistant in the five-year-old kindergarten. On July 3, 1948, she married the love of her life, James Elliott (Jim) Reeves, and was his wife for 63 years. In 1957, she and her husband moved to Jacksonville, FL, to continue Jim's career with Devoe and Raynolds Paint Co. It was here their only child, Jane Catherine Reeves was born. In 1963, they returned to Spartanburg for Jim to accept new duties with Devoe and where they have lived ever since. She was a member of First Baptist Church for 58 years. She taught in the preschool Sunday School department for twenty years, and was a member of the Mary Belle Gardener Sunday School Class. She also volunteered at First Baptist Church Helping Center for a number of years. Margaret was a member of Snow Campaign Chapter of Fountain Inn, SC, as well as the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of the Col. Jacob Blackwell Chapter South Carolina Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century and the National Society of Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century. In addition to her husband, James, Margaret is survived by her daughter, Jane Reeves Wells and her husband Randy Walker Wells; a granddaughter, Caroline Margaret Eaddy Hughey and her husband Steven Michael Hughey, and their son, Steven James "Jamey" Hughey. She is also survived by two nieces, Iris Ann Johnson and the Rev. Margaret Ann Sheely; a great nephew, Capt. William Gray Johnson and his wife Lori, and their two sons, Noah and Asher, and daughter Sydney; a great niece, Laura Johnson Dickson and her husband David, and their two daughters, Marley and Chloe. A step grandson, Philip and his wife Amanda, and their sons Ayden and Jace; and a step granddaughter, Amanda Leigh Wells, also survive. She is predeceased by her two sisters, Anne Blanche Clayton (Izzy Gray Johnson) and Vivian Clayton (Jesse Clarence Sheely); also her brother, James Madison Clayton (Hazel Poole), and their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Clayton McCorkle. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 25, 2012, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Robert A. Ivey. Visitation will follow at the graveside.
