Margaret Gowan

July 24, 1925 — December 16, 2012

Margaret Elizabeth Gowan, 87, of Spartanburg, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at her daughter's home. Born July 24, 1925, in Spartanburg, she was the wife of the late Frank Harrison Gowan and daughter of the late Allen P. and Gertrude Hollingsworth Smith. Mrs. Gowan was a member of Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church, Walnut Grove, SC. She loved her family, her Lord, her church, and especially the children she taught. For 52 years, she helped build a firm foundation in the lives of Covenant Children of Mt. Calvary through her faithful service teaching Sunday School. She consistently demonstrated the love of Christ week after week teaching her precious children. Every child left her class knowing that Jesus and "Miss Margaret" loved them. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Pettit and son-in-law, Atlee Pettit; three precious grandchildren, Julie Pettit Cooper (Brian), Kay Pettit Kirby (Tyler), and Steve Pettit (Tiffany); six great-grandchildren, Jacob Cooper, Brock Kirby, Julianne Cooper, Goldie Kirby, Andrew Kirby, and John Tyler Kirby; and her sister, Virginia S. Williams of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by her brother, Allen Smith Jr. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church in Walnut Grove, SC, by the Rev. Richard Thomas, the Rev. Tyler Kirby, and Mr. Mark Kozak. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Children's Ministry, 1399 Walnut Grove Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Atlee Pettit.
