Margaret McNamara Danfy Fleck, 93, passed away peacefully December 8, 2024, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House after a brief illness. Mrs. Fleck, affectionately known as Bernie, was born January 13, 1931, in New York City. Bernie grew up in Astoria, NY and attended St. Michael’s Academy for Young Ladies where she made lifelong friends.
In New York, Bernie met and married Richard Danfy. They moved to Spartanburg, SC in 1964 where they raised their six children. Richard died after 33 years of marriage. After Richard’s death she married Alphonse Fleck, adding two daughters to her family. Bernie was the owner of the Yarn Barn in Spartanburg for seventeen years. She was an avid and expert knitter. Her legendary patience teaching new knitters the craft, and her New York sense of humor “kept everyone in stitches”. Her family members and friends still enjoy the beautiful hats, scarves, and sweaters that she created, and others benefitted from the garments she made and donated to charities.
She was an original member of Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, where her husband Richard Danfy, was a member of the building committee. Bernie loved traveling, from the cross-country family trips with six children in a station wagon and a pop-up camper to the luxury cruises and European trips with her husbands, family and friends
Bernie is survived by her eight children and stepchildren; Richard Danfy, Jr. (Jean), Lisa Francis (Melton), Patricia Epting (Carrol), Charlotte Fleck (Stevan Arbona), Kenneth Danfy, Peter Danfy, Andrew Danfy, Arthur Danfy, and their honorary son and daughter Scott and Susan Gammons; Seven grandchildren,; John Epting (Brittany), Philip Epting (Ashley), Erin Danfy, Erica Francis, Emily Fedro (Greg), Aidan Arbona and Christine Overcarsh (Bryan); Six great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Walker, Theodore, Ian, Charles, and Emmet. Bernie was predeceased by her parents Bernard and Margaret O'Shea McNamara, her sister Marie Toner, her husband of 33 years Richard Danfy, and her second husband of 22 years, Alphonse R. Fleck.
Bernie lived for the past year at Summit Hill assisted living. Her family would like to thank all the caregivers there for their compassion while she was in their care. The family would especially wish to thank Ava, Milly, and Dawn for their efforts to make Bernie comfortable. The family also wishes to recognize the kindness of the staff at the Hospice House, where Bernie once volunteered, and was awarded Volunteer of the Year. Her life completed a circle.
