Margaret Watts Burroughs

July 12, 1924 — March 7, 2025

Margaret Burroughs was born July 12, 1924, to Reverend Franklin Stoy Watts and Elizabeth Gardner Watts. She grew up mostly in Columbia, where she met her husband of 62 years, the late William J. Burroughs. Together they had 5 children.

Margaret was a dedicated and faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 70 years and was also its oldest member. Margaret taught the 3 and 4 year old kindergarten Sunday School class for over 40 years. And was much remembered and beloved by her former students.

She was a homemaker and a phenomenal cook and loved nothing better than hosting her annual Thanksgiving dinner every year. Margaret had a green thumb and could grow almost anything, but she was best known for her beautiful hydrangeas and most of her family has their own which she lovingly rooted from her plants. She was a person who always had a smile and showed God’s love to others continually.

Margaret loved the Lord and was a faithful witness to the love and mercy of God and encouraged everyone she met to give their heart and life to the Lord. Some of her last conversations involved stating, “God is so good to us” and singing her favorite song, “Because He Lives, I Can Face Tomorrow”.

She shared her faith with whomever would listen and was a walking testament to God’s love, strength and grace. She was a prayer warrior, always praying each day for her family, all of whom she called by name in each prayer as well as praying for anyone else who needed it. When asked at her 90th birthday what she wanted people to know in life, she simply said, “Put God first in your lives”. Margaret made a lasting impact on anyone who met her and those who did immediately fell in love with her. She has truly left a void in the lives of those around her although they all rejoice in the fact that she is now worshipping at the feet of the Savior she served for so long and is reunited with her beloved Bill.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband William J. Burroughs; son, Danny Burroughs; and grandson, Scott Burroughs, as well as her parents and siblings.

Margaret is survived by her children, David Burroughs (Cindy) of McConnells, S.C., Diane Graham (David), of Spartanburg, S.C., Debora Harley, of Spartanburg, S.C., Donald Burroughs (SueAnn) of Charlotte, N.C., and Julie Dey (Joe) of Augusta, G.A. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren; Bryan Burroughs (Kelli) of York, S.C., Brent Burroughs of McConnells, S.C., Eric Green (Danielle) of Pacolet, S.C., Cameron Green (Crystal) of Spartanburg, S.C., Shannon Wyne (Andy) of Charleston, W.V., Ashley Harley, of Spartanburg, S.C., Christine Harley, Spartanburg, S.C., Billy Burroughs (Lauren) of Augusta, G.A., Daniel Burroughs (Erin) of Augusta, G.A., Kylie Burroughs of Tampa, F.L., Mavis Burroughs of Lafayette, L.A., as well as 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild due in July.
