Major Scruggs

Major Banks Scruggs, 85, of Spartanburg, SC, formerly of LaGrange, GA, died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born December 17, 1929 in Chesnee, SC, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Ruby Blackwell Scruggs. Mr. Scruggs was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in the Korean War on the U.S.S. Helena. He received a Korean Service Medal and a United Nations Ribbon. He was a retired Maintenance Supervisor from Milliken Corporation and was inducted into the Milliken Hall of Fame. Mr. Scruggs was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC and attended Dunson Methodist Church in LaGrange, GA. Survivors include daughters, Sheila Gossett (Bill), Charlene Sanders (Stan), and Janice Tinsley; a son, Michael Scruggs (Barbara); brothers, Sam Scruggs and Tommy Scruggs; sisters, Elwanda Parris, Betty Cash, Nancy Ford, Judy Reddington, and Brenda Hoy; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was widowed by his wife, Willie Mae Gardner Scruggs in 1989. He was predeceased by two sisters, Cornelius "Tootsie" Eaker, and Laura Ann Powell. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Andy Case. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home of the daughter, Charlene Sanders, 358 E. Killarney Lake Dr., Moore, SC 29369.
