Madge York

Madge Mize York, 101, wife of the late Robert Lee York, died on Friday, July 8, 2022.  Mrs. York was born August 31, 1920, on College Street in Spartanburg.  She was predeceased by her mother, Irene Peahuff, her father Oren Peahuff, her husband, Robert Lee York, her brothers, Edwin Mize and George “Buck” Peahuff, and a sister, Evelyn Mae Fincher.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Madge never had children of her own, but she loved and cared for hundreds of children who attended her Sunday School class at Green Street Baptist Church over the many years.  Madge’s church meant the world to her.  She was on the cradle roll at birth and was a lifelong member and contributor until its closing in May 2016.  She adored her church family and they adored her.  They always made sure she had transportation to church on Monday and Wednesday each week after her brother, George, died in 2013.  She was almost always present.

Madge retired from Beaumont Mills in her early 60’s.   She loved traveling, photography, sewing, crafts, shopping and most especially coffee and dessert! She lived a wonderfully long life of grace and dignity, and she will be missed beyond measure.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 13, 2022, 1:00PM, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC, 29307, conducted by the Rev. Larry Fleming.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC, 29307.
