Homer Van Vleet, Jr., 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, January 31, 2014, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born December 19, 1921, in Decatur, IL, he was the son of the late Homer Joseph and Leota Coffin Van Vleet, and husband, for 65 years, of the late Anne Bruce Cartwright Van Vleet. A retired U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, Lt. Col. Van Vleet was a member of the Military's Officer Association of America (MOAA), Daniel Morgan Chapter and Chattanooga Chapter, a member of the Reserve Officer Association and Air Force Association, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and University of Tennessee Letterman's Association. He was an alumnus of the University of Tennessee. Survivors include a son, Richard B. (Donna) Van Vleet of Chesnee, SC; two grandsons, Richard B. (Tami) Van Vleet, Jr. and Ryan H. (Katherine) Van Vleet, all of Spartanburg, SC; six great-grandchildren, Zack, Zoe, Zayden, Zane, Harrison, and Thomas; one great-great-granddaughter, Braylee Darnell; and one brother, Lt. Col. Merle C. Van Vleet USAF (Ret.) of Nashville, TN. Visitation will be 2:00-3:15 PM Sunday, February 2, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 3:30 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian Arant. Burial with military rites by the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or the Chattanooga Chapter of Military Officers of America Scholarship Fund, PO Box 24482, Chattanooga, TN 37442-4482. The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the staff of Summit Hills for their care and compassion. The family is at their respective homes.
