Louise Kuemmerer Gaines, aged 91, died Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Brookdale Emeritus Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. Born August 7, 1923 in Oconee County, South Carolina, near Walhalla, she was the daughter of the late John Mitchell and Janie Gillespie Kuemmerer and the widow of Walter Gaffney Gaines. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Women of the Church, Fellowship Sunday School Class, Circle 1 and Parish callers. In 1940, Mrs. Gaines began a government program of studies and training offered by Clemson College, which trained women to take the place of men being drafted to war. After completion of training, she worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service in the cartographic division. She is survived by two daughters, E. Linda Gaines of Tampa, Florida and Sandra G. Johnston and her husband, Warren N. Johnston of South Royalton, Vermont; two sisters, Margaret Wuger of Tempe, Arizona, and Helen Potts of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her were four brothers, John, Fred, Fritz and Dr. Henry Kuemmerer, and two sisters, Carrie Knorr and Dr. Janie Kuemmerer. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale conducted by the Rev. Michael Shackelford and the Rev. Emily Edenfield. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside.
