Dr. Louis Josselin Dodd, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, devoted husband of 64 years to the late Shirley Guiomar Hoover Dodd, died Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born January 9, 1923, in São Paulo, Brazil, he was the son of the late George Saville Dodd and Edith Gladys Hemming Dodd, also of São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Dodd was a devoted husband, father, friend, and physician. He had a quick sense of humor, an inquisitive mind, and loved to engage in conversation with anyone. He was always the gentleman and loved his hot tea. In 1944, he joined the Brazilian Air Force and became an officer and pilot. He cross-trained in pilot instruction with the U. S. Army Air Corps in Waco, TX, and completed his service in 1946. He loved flying and continued to fly recreationally. Dr. Dodd practiced medicine for 45 years in a compassionate, insightful and intuitive manner. He earned his medical degree from the Federal University Paulista School of Medicine in São Paulo, Brazil. He practiced surgery, obstetrics and gynecology in Brazil, studied trauma emergencies and ob/gyn practices in the USA, and completed a residency in pathology in Norfolk, VA and Wilmington, DE. In 1968, he accepted the position of pathologist for Mary Black Memorial Hospital bringing the family to Spartanburg, SC, where he worked until 1978. Afterwards, he established a general practice in Anderson, SC. In 1988, he became a physician at Patrick Harris Mental Health Hospital, Anderson, SC. Upon his retirement in 1998, he returned to Spartanburg, SC, with Shirley. Survivors include his sons, David J. Dodd (Lisa) of Spartanburg, SC, Alan G. Dodd of Santa Rosa, Ca, Mark H. Dodd of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Christopher and Emily, also of Wilmington, NC; niece, Charlotte Guiomar Armstrong of Silver Spring, MD; grand niece and nephew, Anna and Mark; and many other nieces and nephews in Brazil, England, Australia, and the USA; and his loving dog, Casey. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry of Piraquara, PR, Brazil and Edward (Sara) of Villa Velha, ES, Brazil. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, February 20, 2017, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. David E. Nichols of Bethel United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, SC, where Dr. Dodd was a member. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home.
