Mrs. Loretta Phillips Cudd, of Laurens, died Sunday, November 4, 2012, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens. Born March 17, 1921 in Greensboro, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine Bray Phillips. Loretta graduated from Gardner-Webb College in 1949, where she was on Student Council, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Choir and Secretary to the Director of Guidance. In addition, she was House President of the Girls Dorm. After graduation she continued her leadership, by becoming Educational Director at Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, where she met her husband, the late Claud E. Cudd, owner of The Time Shop. They later attended Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, where they enjoyed loving relationships with the young families in the church. In 1986 she and her husband were founding members of the Martha Franks Community. They were devoted to the fellowship and all the activities there. Her brother, Sterling E. Phillips of Burlington, North Carolina; and her niece, Gay Baynes of Onancock, VA, survive her. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 8, 2012, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, by the Rev. Dr. Russell Dean. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM Thursday, November 8, 2012, in the Chapel at Martha Franks in Laurens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, 1 Martha Franks Drive, Laurens, SC 29360.
