Loren Murphy

Loren John Murphy, 88, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. John was born September 11, 1929 in Glenwood, Iowa. He was the son of the late Lydia Kupka Murphy and Loren Earl Murphy. John graduated from General Motors Technical School and the University of Nebraska. He served as a U. S. Air Force pilot during the Korean War. In 1952, John married the love of his life, Maryann Vacek Murphy. She predeceased him on May 6, 2013. In 1958, John moved his family from Nebraska to Spartanburg where he served as Vice President and co-owner of M&M Chevrolet for 50 years. He was a board member of Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce, Spartanburg Day School and First National Bank. John was a 60 year member of Bethel Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and financial board member. John had four children: Lori, Mike (Vicky), Austin, and Sally (Ben); five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 PM Saturday, January 20, 2018, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family may not be present but asks that everyone share a favorite story about Mr. Murphy in the memory book that will be available. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg SC 29306; Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg SC 29304; or for Parkinson's Research at Michael J. Fox Foundation https://www.michaeljfox.org/. The family would like to thank all of the staff of Comfort Keepers, Compassus Hospice, and Dillon Pointe for their wonderful care of Mr. Murphy.
