Lois Smith Hammett, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born September 4, 1930 in Converse, SC, she was the daughter of the late Fred Lee and Edith Mae Delph Smith and the wife of the late Carlisle Edward Hammett.
An LPN, Lois was a longtime nurse at Spartanburg General Hospital (later Spartanburg Regional Medical Center), retiring after 29 years of service.
She loved music, played the piano by ear, was famous for her chocolate oatmeal cookies and banana pudding. She truly cared more for others than for herself.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Hammett Brown (John Ashmore Brown, Jr.) of Columbia, SC; her sons, Gary Carlisle Hammett (Fern Elayne Hammett) of Mount Airy, NC and Brian Edward Hammett of Spartanburg, SC; 12 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren; and her siblings, Margie Brown of Mooresville, NC, Betty Ramsey of Gastonia, NC, Merle Seay of Inman, SC and Don Smith of Cowpens, SC. She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Smith and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hammett.
Visitation will be 12:00 – 1:45 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Robert Brown, along with several eulogists. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
