Lillie Sumner

Lillie Pitinar Smith Sumner, 92, of 6592 Highway 56, Pauline, SC, and resident at Mountainview Nursing Home, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Born March 7, 1919, Mrs. Sumner was the wife of the late Sum McGowan Sumner, and daughter of the late Lawrence Lifus and Maude Lawson Smith. A lifelong resident of Spartanburg County and oldest member of Friendship Baptist Church, Mrs. Sumner attended Pauline High School and she was employed in the textile industry. After retirement, she cared for the elderly and enjoyed a multitude of handcrafts. She was the longest living member of her generation from the Smith and Sumner families, which included 12 and 8 siblings respectively. Mrs. Sumner is survived by a loving family: son, B. Callie Sumner of Pauline; daughter, Mae Sumner Myers and her husband William "Bill" of Cedar Spring; granddaughter, Kim Sumner Bryant and her husband Ricky of Pauline; grandson, Mack Sumner and his wife Lori of Pauline; and granddaughter, Tammie McCarley Maddock and her husband Mike of Blythewood, SC She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith George; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Bryant, Cole and MacKenzie Sumner, and McCarley, Ashley, and John Maddock; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sumner; three sisters; eight brothers; daughter-in-law, Shirley Skinner Sumner; and son-in-law, W. Kennon McCarley. Visitation will be held 1:00-1:45 PM Friday, February 3, 2012, at Friendship Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, in the church, conducted by the Rev. Brian P. Harris, the Rev. Dr. Keith Taylor, and the Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 830 Friendship Church Road, Pauline, SC 29374.
