Lillie Garrett

July 26, 1923 — April 11, 2011

Lillie Mae Cole Garrett, 87, of Spartanburg, went to be with her Lord Jesus on Monday, April 11, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born July 26, 1923, in Mountville, SC, Mrs. Garrett has called Spartanburg home for many years. For the last two years, she has resided at Summer Place Assisted Living in Boiling Springs. She was the sixth child born to the late Rufus and Ina Pearl Sanders Cole and was married to the late A. T. Garrett for 22 years. Mrs. Garrett was an active member of Mountain View Baptist Church on Parris Bridge Road where she was loved by many who knew her as "Nannie". She worked as a registered nurse at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC and in the pediatric department at Spartanburg General Hospital. She retired in 1980 from the Spartanburg County Health Department where she worked in the crippled children's department administering immunization injections. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Garrett Burress (Tom) of Spartanburg; her son, Thomas W. Garrett of Spartanburg; her granddaughters, Cindy Burress Tucker (Matt) of Philadelphia, PA and Laurie Burress Neff (Chris) of Inman; step-children, Bud Garrett (Dot), Lou Garrett Malone, and Joe Garrett (Sheri), all of Spartanburg, and Lois Garrett Gray of Moore; and her sister, Betty Cole Gardner of Pelzer. She also helped raise four step-grandchildren, Carla Schubach Nardi (Vince) of Durham, NC, Kenneth W. Schubach (Pam) of Woodruff, Margie E. Thomason of Fruitland, NC, and Frances Shipman Rogers of Spartanburg; along with many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and others who adopted her as their "Nannie". She was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Earl Cole, R. L. Cole, Ruby Cole Boone, Ervin Cole, Chris Cole, Ina Cole, Margaret Cole Chaney, and Grady Cole; and step-daughter, Ruth Emma Garrett Schubach. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Floyd's Boiling Springs Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2011 at Mountain View Baptist Church on Parris Bridge Road, conducted by the Rev. Tyler Kirby and the Rev. Billy Cole. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, 5555 Parris Bridge Rd., Boiling Springs, SC 29316; or to Carpenters for Christ, 120 Mabry Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
