Lewis Valentine

Lewis "Jiggs" Valentine, 91, a lifelong resident of Pacolet, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Skylyn Place in Spartanburg. Born February 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Chan Scott and Estelle Harrold Valentine. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Wilkins Valentine. Mr. Valentine served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, spending three years throughout the South Pacific Theater as a member of A.T. Co. 169 Infantry Regiment, 43 Infantry Division. He received four battle stars for action on Guadalcanal, Northern Salomon Islands, New Guinea and Luzon, Philippines. He was discharged as an Army Tech Sergeant. After the war, Mr. Valentine worked for Pacolet Mill, Milliken, and Kohler Company, where he was fondly know as the "*#[email protected]* little agitator" for his sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, spending time with his grandsons and was a very good cook. He was a member of Pacolet Mills United Methodist Church and attended school at Pacolet Mills. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, L. Scott Valentine, II (Theresa) of Corvallis, OR; a daughter, Candace Valentine Brown of Spartanburg; four grandsons, Chan Valentine of Juneau, AK, Lewis Valentine of Corvallis, OR, Dylan Brown (Sharon) of Stafford, VA, and Toby Brown and great-grandchildren Aidan and Anna Brown of Pacolet; a niece, Jane Parker Neal; two nephews, Dallas and Ray Parker; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Dallas; a sister, Winfred Valentine Parker; and son-in-law, David Allan Brown. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Floyd's Pacolet Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Norman Band. Visitation will follow at the Chapel. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice; or the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at american.redcross.org.
