Leroy Beaty

Leroy Beaty, 85, of 135 Temple Street, Arcadia, SC, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born November 27, 1925 in Gastonia, NC, he was the son of the late William (Willie) Lester and Effie Mae Harvey Beaty. Leroy was a member of Arcadia First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Training Union Director, Deacon, and other various positions. He served with the U.S. Marine Corp, South Carolina National Guard, and South Carolina State Guard. He was a member of the American Legion Post 28 and Marine Corp League. He served as Fire Chief of the Arcadia Fire Department from 1957-1987 and served on the Board of Commissioners. His accomplishments include starting the first Volunteer Rescue Squad in the State of South Carolina, Arcadia Rescue 1, in 1958. He was past-President of both the Spartanburg County Fire Chiefs Association and Spartanburg County Rescue Association; and was inducted into the Spartanburg County Fire Fighters Hall of Fame. He served on the Sheriff's Advisory Committee for a number of years and was a Leader of Boy Scout Troop #29, a State Constable, and was a School Crossing Guard for Dist 7 Schools. He retired as Supervisor of Weaving at Mayfair Mills after 44 years of service. Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Julia McIntyre Beaty; two daughters, Jean Bradley of the home, and Joan (Ernie) Davis of Arcadia; a son, Ted (Betty) Beaty of Arcadia; two granddaughters, Jennifer Massey (Mike) Seigler of Lyman and Shelby Beaty of Arcadia; two grandsons, Chris (Aleisha) Massey and Micah (Stacie) Horton of Boiling Springs; four great-grandchildren, Micah Shane II and Matthew Spencer Horton, AJ Seigler and Carlin Shea Massey; six step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; a special daughter Barbara (Mike) Morris of Campobello; three brothers, Troy (Margaret) Beaty, Grady (Ann) Beaty, and Boyce Beaty all of Spartanburg; a sister, Fairlene (Frank) Underwood of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law, Lewis McDade; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret McDade; a sister-in-law, Norma (Tincy) Beaty; and a great-grandson, Alexander Lee Seigler. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 PM Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 28, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joey Burnett and the Rev. Jerry Clevenger. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Cash and the Rev. Tom Sawyer, followed by military honors. Pallbearers are Micah Horton, Don Johnson, Dan Bridgeman, Eddie Dearybury, Bill Hall, Phil McIntyre, Doug Horton, and Mike Seigler. Honorary Escort will be former members of the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue 1 and members of Boy Scout Troop #29.
