Leon Wilbur Vehorn, 94, formerly of Spartanburg, died on Monday, November 23, 2009, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. Mr. Vehorn was born on June 19, 1915, in Gramling, SC. He was the son of the late William L. Vehorn and Minnie McDade Vehorn. Mr. Vehorn graduated from Gramling High School and attended Wofford College. Before retiring, he worked for Southern Bell for 36 years. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Gladys B. Vehorn; two sons, Henry (Evelyn) Vehorn of Irmo, and Ronnie (Janet) Vehorn of Queenstown, South Africa; two daughters, Gloria (Avery) Nelson of Florence, and Martha (Don) Boomer of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Jay) Seawell of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Hal (Cathy) Nelson of Shanghai, China, Carter (Elisabeth) Nelson of Mt. Pleasant, Austin Nelson of Charleston, Luke Vehorn of Mt. Pleasant, Abbey (Dan) Morris of Summerville, and Lauren (Aaron) Spencer of Salem, Oregon; eight great-grandchildren, Brooke, Jackson, and Lauren Seawell, Abigail and Avery Nelson, Claire and Whit Nelson, and Emma Morris; and a sister, Peggy Sanders of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and a son, Daniel L. Vehorn. Mr. Vehorn, affectionately known as "Whit", will be deeply missed by his family. He was a pilot, an avid outdoorsman, and a saltwater angler. He had a keen wit and entertaining sense of humor. He will be fondly remembered for his ingenuity and unmatched ability to "fix" anything. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2009, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Inman, SC, conducted by the Rev. Roger Allison.
