Lawrence Ira Sparks, 99, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, May 1, 2017. Born March 8, 1918, in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late John Olin Sparks and Carrie Mae Smith Sparks. A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Sparks retired as a USDA Inspector. He was a Mason and member of Lone Oak Lodge #372 and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his sons, Rev. Tommy L. Sparks (Cathy) of Pacolet, SC, and Chuck Sparks (LuAnn) of Lyman, SC; 4 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Ruby Nix Sparks, second wife, Irene Biggs Sparks; and brothers, Vernon and Gartrail Sparks. A graveside service will be conducted at 4:00 PM Friday, May 5, 2017, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Dwight Easler. Visitation will be at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
