Lawrence Davis

Lawrence Jefferson Davis, 97, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Summit Hills. Born, May 12, 1913, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Lawrence T. and Mattie Wood Davis and husband, of 58 years, to the late Ann Rebecca "Becky" McDowell Davis. He was retired, after 42 years of service, as a telegraph operator/night manager with Western Union and was also a Morse Code operator. Mr. Davis was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Survivors include a son, J. Ken Davis and wife Gail of Spartanburg; three grandsons, Rob Davis and wife Amanda of Fort Mill, SC, Greg Davis and wife Julie of Moore, SC, and Marc Davis and wife Jane Courtney of Jacksonville, FL; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan and Matt Davis of Fort Mill, SC; Elizabeth Davis of Moore, SC; Will, Sam, Leila Jane, and Annabelle Davis of Jacksonville, FL; and a brother, James W. Davis of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Davis and a sister, Mary Davis. Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 PM Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Jett and the Rev. Sal Barone. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice Compassus for their care during the last several days of Dad's life. They would also like to give a special thanks to the staff of Summit Hills, especially the nurses and CNA's, for their loving care and affection during the last two years of his life.
