Lavinia Eldridge

September 20, 1919 — October 28, 2014

Lavinia Taylor Eldridge passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the age of 95. She was the oldest child of the late Mamie Hudson Taylor and Julius W. Taylor of Tryon, NC. Lavinia attended Tryon, NC schools and in 1940 she married Roy C. Eldridge who was then a Chief Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy. At the end of World War II, she and Roy and their 2 year old daughter moved to Spartanburg, SC where she would live most of her adult life. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a current member of Fernwood Baptist Church in Spartanburg. She taught Sunday School at both churches for many years. A kind, sweet, and soft spoken lady she adored and treasured her family and friends. She loved God and her church, flower arranging, playing bridge, square dancing, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. In 2008, she became a resident at Emeritus at Eastover in Charlotte, NC. Survivors include her daughter, Rita E. Vandiver and husband Bill of Charlotte, NC; her son, R. Charles Eldridge Jr. and wife Diane of Greenville, SC; four grandchildren, Jeff Vandiver and wife Noelle, Katie Vandiver Lee and husband Tommy, all of Charlotte, NC, Ross Eldridge and wife Kara of Atlanta, GA, and Chase Eldridge and wife Jessica of Greenville, SC; and six great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kathryn, and Julia Vandiver, Simmons and Thomas Lee, all of Charlotte, NC, and Claire Taylor Eldridge of Atlanta, GA; her brother, Harold Taylor and wife Ruth of Tryon, NC; and sister-in-law, Jo Taylor of Boydton, VA; and many nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Seth J. Taylor and Fred H. Taylor. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 1, 2014, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Stuart Jones. Visitation will follow at the graveside. Memorials may be made to Fernwood Baptist Church, 200 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
