Kathleen Anne Gibson Elam

Kathleen Elam, 81, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 31, 2024. A native of New Orleans, LA, she was born on October 18, 1942, a daughter of the late Robert Thomas Gibson and Vivian Marie Muller. She was the wife of the late Edwin Essex Elam, Jr and mother of the late Kathleen Louise.

 Kathleen attended USC Upstate graduating with her Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Education after starting her college career at Loyola University New Orleans. She worked for over 30 years in education. Her teaching career with Spartanburg County District 7 included assignments at ZL Madden Elementary School. Kathleen took great pride in her career, being part of the ZL Madden team and the many students she taught during her many decades in education. She was also very proud of earning National Board Certifications as well as her many recognitions received for her time in the classroom.

Kathleen is survived by her children Marie (Alan), Edwin III (Joel), and Theresa (David), 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A Catholic Funeral Mass has been scheduled for 10:30 am, Saturday, November 16, 2024 at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Spartanburg. A Catholic Mass and graveside burial service will follow in New Orleans.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kathleen’s name to Hatcher Garden, PO Box 2337, Spartanburg, SC 29304. All donations will be designated for the Children’s Garden in honor of her love for children.
