Katharine Valencia Green Bowman Berg, born November 27, 1913 in Natchez, MS, died May 26, 2010. She was the wife of the late Colonel Fredrick T. Berg, USA (Ret.). She was the daughter of the late Lucile Millsaps Green and Ernest Arthur Green. She survived a brother, Ernest Carroll Green who died in World War II, and sisters, Elizabeth Rigante of Orlando, FL and Nancy Shaw Rucker of Richmond Hill Plantation, near Harriston, MS. Katharine (Val) attended Vanderbilt University and the University of Chicago. She worked as a newspaper reporter for the Charlotte Observer, the Times Picayune, and spent the rest of her career working in Germany for the Stars & Stripes and for the Department of the Army. She traveled extensively in Europe and throughout the world. She enjoyed skiing, riding, bridge, and later in life, gardening at her home in Ceiba, Puerto Rico. She and Colonel Berg resided in Puerto Rico for 30 years. Val is survived by her daughter, Ann Valencia Bowman Holmes (and husband Jeffrey of Spartanburg, SC); her granddaughter, Stephanie Holmes Burton (and husband Brian of Spartanburg, SC); and stepson Rodrick Berg (and wife Joyce of Ridgewood, NJ); and great grandchildren, Audrey Clair, Patrick, Allison and James Burton. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Skylyn Place, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald E. Chapman.
