J. Vernon Atkinson, Jr.

James Vernon Atkinson, Jr., 78, of Spartanburg, SC died Saturday, December 11, 2021. Born April 22, 1943 in Bennettsville, SC, he was the son of the late James Vernon Atkinson, Sr. and Irene Newton Atkinson.

Vernon was a graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina Columbia. A US Navy veteran, Mr. Atkinson was the founder of Summit Engineering Co.

A member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder, he served on various committees including the Budget and Building & Grounds. He also served on the Board of Directors of The Haven and volunteered at the Soup Kitchen and was a member of The SC Society of Professional Engineers. Additionally, he was President of Carolina Foothills Federal Credit Union.

Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Velma Roddy Atkinson, his sons, Warren R. Atkinson (Reynolds) of Inman, SC and James Paul Atkinson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, three grandchildren, Molly Atkinson, Kent Childress, and Madison Childress, and his sister, Helen Anne Haile (Rip), and niece Stacie Haile of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Visitation will be 2:30 – 3:30 PM Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Second Presbyterian Church, 438 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303. A Funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM at the church, conducted by The Rev. Jason Moore. Burial will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, December 16, 2021 in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery, 2408 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church.
