Alice June Cannon Cureton, age 89, passed away peacefully in her home under hospice care on Wednesday, the 19th of October, 2011 surrounded by her family and caregivers. June is survived by William McDow "Mac" Cureton, her loving husband of 62 years. Also surviving are her daughter, Nancy Ogletree (Ron); her son, Richard Cureton (Laura); four grandchildren, Kelly Ogletree Turner (Kevin), Spencer Cureton, Michael Cureton, and Kyle Cureton; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Cameron Turner; and 17 nieces and nephews. June was born March 15, 1922, the eighth of Sarah E. Simmons and Simpson Fant Cannon Sr.'s ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; five brothers, Simpson Jr., David, Edwin, Bernard, and Jack Cannon; and four sisters, Sarah Spell, Marjorie Cannon, Helen Cannon, Mary Pridgeon. June was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Winthrop College. June was a life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church serving on its local, district, and state boards, in children's ministries, a member of the chancel choir, the H. F. Chreitzberg Class, the Altar Guild, Circle 2, and United Methodist Women. June served as Director of Methodist Students at Winthrop. She taught in South Carolina elementary schools for more than 20 years, ending her teaching career at Z. L. Madden Elementary School in Spartanburg School District 7. June, an alto, loved sacred and classical music. She played piano and French horn. A highlight of her musical endeavors was playing the French horn at the 1939 World's Fair in New York as a member of the Winthrop College band. June was tenderly cared for by devoted home health-care aides during her extended illness, particularly Jessie Jackson-White, Angela Long, Kayla Hodge, and Sarah Wise. Visits from family and friends brightened June's final days. Family will receive friends 4:00-6:00 PM Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Private interment Monday morning. A service to celebrate June's life will be at 3:00 PM, Monday, October 24, 2011, at Bethel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. David B. Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Trustee Fund, 245 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or to TOTAL Ministries, 420 Union Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306-3554.
