Julia Rockwood

Julia Lee Smith Rockwood, 70, of 226 Hagood Road, died Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Born July 16, 1939, in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Grady T. and Lucille Looper Smith. She was a graduate of Queen's University with a degree in Sociology and Mathematics and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC. She was the original organizer and benefactor for the Southeastern Wildlife Festival, co-founder of PACT - Parents and Children Together, co-author and publisher of a cookbook, and supporter and member of the Board of Directors for Safe Harbor of Greenville. She was also one of the founding members of Grandmothers Against Garbage (GAG). Through their influence, Palmetto Pride was started. As a result of their pioneering work at SCLCA (South Carolina Litter Control Association), she was awarded the Presidential Award for meritorious service. Survivors include her husband, Richard Glenn Rockwood; three daughters, Heathe Provost of Greenville, Leslie Tiffany of Kailua, HI, and Mary Ross Trowbridge of Jacksonville, FL; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2010, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29650, conducted by the Rev. Dave Carlson. The family will receive friends following the service at the home, 226 Hagood Road, Cleveland, SC 29635. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Safe Harbor of Greenville, P. O.
