Julia Kugler

Julia S. Kugler, 88, formerly of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at home in Tampa, Florida with her family surrounding her. Born December 9, 1933, in Jersey City, New Jersey she was the daughter of the late William and Helen McDougall Shult and was married to the late Richard “Dick” Kugler for 60 years.

Mrs. Kugler attended Cornell University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and lived in Westchester, NY until 1972. She then moved to SC where she taught at Greenville Technical College before moving on to the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg which later became Mary Black College of Nursing. In addition to teaching, Julia ran the Tech Lab at USC-S. She loved photography and technology. In 1979, she graduated from Furman University with her Master’s in Ed Leadership and moved to Lake Bowen in Inman, SC, where she realized her dream of living on a lake.

Mrs. Kugler retired from USC-S in 1995 and busied herself with her favorite hobbies, knitting, cross stitch, crafting, gardening, baking (delicious breads!), reading, making her famous strawberry jam, spoiling her grandchildren, and of course… keeping Mr. Kugler on the straight and narrow! She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC and attended Idlewild Baptist Church after moving to Tampa in 2015.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Kugler of Tampa, FL, her son, Richard A. Kugler, Jr. (Kathy) of Landrum, SC, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and her brother, William Schult, Jr.

Visitation will be 12:30 – 1:30 pm Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Jack Dodds. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
