Joyce Whitesell

Joyce H. Whitesell, 91, of Chesnee, SC, formerly of Jamestown, NC, passed through the Pearly Gates into the hands of our Lord God on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Born August 18, 1925, in Belmont, NC, she was the eldest child of William M. Hunsucker and Grace Hooker Hunsucker. Joy was a wonderful mother and talented artist. She loved challenges and with her "green thumb" she grew many tropical plants and was known locally as the "Pineapple Lady" for growing pineapple and Bromeliad plants. Joy was very involved in her church, Jamestown Presbyterian Church, where she planned the Wednesday night dinners as long as her health permitted. She had many friends and was well known for her child care work. The mother of six children, Joy is survived by Judy DuMars of Inman, SC, Michael Thompson of Thomasville, NC, Mickey Thompson of High Point, NC, Keith Thompson of Spartanburg, SC and Kimberly Carter of Chesnee, SC; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and sister, Gloria Irby (Leon) of Thomasville, NC. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, J. C. Thompson, Jr. and Roy Banks Whitesell; daughter, Joyce Christine Thompson and brother, Billy Hunsucker. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 4, 2017, in Flora Garden Park Cemetery, 1730 W. English Rd., High Point, NC 27262, conducted by the Rev. Newton Cowan.
