Joyce Thornton

Joyce Caldwell Thornton, 85, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. She was the wife of the late Erwin C. Thornton. Born in Spartanburg on April 26, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Lanier Caldwell and Sara Miller Caldwell. A 1953 graduate of Spartanburg High School, she was a homemaker devoted to her family and church. A lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church, she was very active in the Joy Sunday School class and faithfully sang in the choir beginning at age 16. She volunteered for many years at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and Mobile Meals Service. Survivors include her daughter, Anne T. Watson of Greenville, SC; son, Charles E. Thornton (Lisa) of Fort Mill, SC; grandchildren, David Watson, (Bonnie), Mark Watson (Bridgette), Kristen Crawford (Kelly), Halie Nicol (Michael); nine great-grandchildren, and lifelong dear friend, Dot Jolly. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carole Lynn Thornton; grandson, Joshua Keith Crawford; daughter-in-law, Tammy Boothe Thornton, and brother, Eugene Caldwell. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 14, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. Dr. Schuyler Peterson. It is respectfully requested that guests wear masks and practice social distancing. In lieu of flower, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 316 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
