Joyce Gant

Joyce Flynn Gant, 87, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Mavis Dedmond Flynn. Joyce was born on March 10, 1933 in Rutherford County, NC. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, SC. She is survived by a son, Stephen Gant of Spartanburg, SC; daughter, Sharon Glaspey (Tim Nates) of Lake Lure, NC, daughter, Susan Christian (Matt) of Columbia, SC and grandchildren, Lawson Glaspey of Charlotte, NC, Lindsey Christian and Matthew Christian of Columbia, SC. Joyce graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1951 and Furman University, Greenville, SC in 1955. She was selected to Senior Order and was named in Who's Who in American Universities. She graduated with honors with a degree in English. She returned to Furman University for graduate courses and earned her Master's Degree in library science. Joyce worked in Spartanburg County School District #7 for 22 years at The Reading Center and Pine Street Elementary School as the media specialist. She was also a member of the Cherry Laurel Garden Club. Joyce was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. She took a special interest in the education and recreational achievements of her grandchildren, Lawson, Lindsey, and Matthew. Perhaps her greatest joy was spending time with family over the holidays and treating them to her excellent Southern cuisine. She was quite well known for her macaroni and cheese, Christmas Day beef brisket, and hot fudge sauce. The family would like to extend their appreciation to several caring individuals whose friendship she cherished; Patricia Miller, Kevin Patterson and Chris Mckelvey. They would also like to express their gratitude to White Oak Estates and Interim Hospice for the care and support they provided. A private memorial service will be held at a future date.
