Joseph Duval Smith, 72, of Spartanburg, SC and formerly of Tampa, FL, died Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born March 28, 1944, in Savannah, GA, he was the son of the late Palmer Malcolm and Elizabeth Sullivan Smith. Mr. Smith was a model train enthusiast, Civil War historian, and member of the American Electroplaters Society. He was also a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, attended Plant High School in Tampa, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Georgia. Survivors include his wife, Emilie Seidel Smith; children, Ashley Joseph "A. J." Smith (Kimberly) of Charlottesville, VA, Leslie Smith Nissley of Ephrata, PA, and Abigail Smith Jordan (Kyle) of Charlotte, NC; 10 grandchildren, Ella, Virginia, Grace, and Jackson Smith, Will and Emilie Nissley, and Andrew, Madelyn, Molly, and Megyn Jordan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Malcolm and David Smith. A memorial service honoring his life will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, June 6, 2016, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Mia McDowell and the Rev. Suzanne Dornsmith. A reception will follow the service.
