Joseph Rhinehart

Joseph Calvin Rhinehart, 91, of White Rock, SC, died Thursday, November 6, 2014, at The Heritage at Lowman in Chapin, after a long battle with dementia. Born March 16, 1923, in Campobello, SC, he was the son of the late Eddie H. and Pauline Barnette Rhinehart, and husband of the late Margaret V. Smith Rhinehart. A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Rhinehart was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and his unit participated in the liberation of the island of Luzon in the Philippines. He also served as a captain in the South Carolina State Guard. Survivors include his children, Wendell "Eric" Rhinehart (Lynn) of Cape Coral, FL, and Linda Kelly (Johnny) of Leesville, SC; stepdaughters, Elaine Sessions of Ridgeway, SC, and Anne Mull; and two grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Albert and Roy; and stepmother, Mable Rhinehart. A cryptside service, with military rites by the SC Army National Guard, will be conducted at 1:30 PM Saturday, November 8, 2014, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Bob Neely. Visitation will follow at the cryptside. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to Lutheran Homes of South Carolina, 300 Ministry Drive, Irmo, SC 29063.
