Joseph Kirby

March 29, 1923 — February 20, 2016

Joseph Fuller Kirby, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Summit Hills. Born March 26, 1923 in Pacolet, SC, he was the son of the late William T. and Mae Ellis Kirby. He was the widower of Hazel Irene "Jimmie" Saunders for 52 years and Betty Littlejohn for nine years. Mr. Kirby was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the Philippines during WWII. After the war, he moved to Washington, DC and attended American University, graduating with honors with a degree in Economics. He worked for the federal government for 36 years, serving under several administrations that included two terms of duty at the White House serving on the Energy Commission. He retired to Spartanburg in the 1980's and continued his life-long love of history and research completing an extensive genealogy of the Kirby family. He was a life-long member of The Sons of the American Revolution and was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Riener of Spartanburg, SC; a daughter-in-law, Frances F. Kirby; seven grandchildren; and a brother, James Moore Kirby of Columbia, SC. He was also predeceased by a son, Joseph S. Kirby. Visitation will be 3:00 - 3:45 PM Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Celebration of Life service honoring his memory will be conducted at 4:00 PM, conducted by the Rev. Jack Dodds.
