Joseph Franklin Carter, Sr., 82, of Spartanburg, SC died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Ralph Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Charleston, SC. Born April 27, 1931 in High Shoals, NC, he was the son of the late David Earl and Connie Mae Fowler Carter and husband of the late Gail Malone Carter. Mr. Carter was a 1957 graduate of Wofford College with a degree in chemistry and a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a proud member of U. D. T. 11. Surviving are son and family, Joseph Franklin Carter, Jr. and wife Pam of Princeton, WV, granddaughter, Shannon Carter of Boiling Springs, SC, her daughter, Makenna Carter, step-grandson, William Swanlund of Spartanburg, SC, grandsons, Brandon Carter of Spartanburg, SC, Blake Carter of Woodruff, SC, granddaughter, Savannah Carter, grandson, Bret Carter both of Boiling Springs, SC; son, David Stewart Carter and wife Susanne, children, Miranda Gail Carter and Brooke Marian Carter all of Charleston, SC; and sister, Nancy Parks and husband Pat of Athens, GA. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. C. Allen Senn.
