Joseph Blake

Joseph J. Blake, 91, of Spartanburg and the Isle of Palms, SC , died Friday, January 14, 2011, at Summit Hills Retirement Community in Spartanburg. Born October 5, 1919 in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Elizabeth Catterson Blake. Mr. Blake was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, serving at Camp Croft in Spartanburg and in the Pacific. He was an employee of Moreland Chemical Company and its successor, McKesson Chemical, for 35 years before retiring in 1979, where he served as Executive Vice President and was on the Board of Directors. An avid golfer and handyman, he was a member of the Country Club of Spartanburg and the Piedmont Club. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, where he served as lay reader and head usher. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lona J. Blake; a daughter, Kathy B. Pinkney of Greenville, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph J. Blake and Claire K. Blake of Greenville, SC; and two grandchildren, Joseph Brian Blake and Elizabeth C. Blake of Greenville, SC. Funeral services will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by Rev. W. Waller Caldwell, III. Visitation will follow the service at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Summit Hills for their caring compassion. The family is at their respective homes.
